WHAT TO CHARGE AS A SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER

You’re a social media manager who struggles with pricing.

Welcome to the club!

You’re in the right place if you want to learn exactly how to price your services with confidence.

I love to talk about pricing because it’s something that holds so many of us back.

When I started as a social media manager, I charged my first client £75 a month to manage TWO platforms - Twitter and Pinterest so it wasn’t even like I could repurpose content….

WHO AM I TO BE SUCCESSFUL?: HOW TO OVERCOME THE LIMITING BELIEFS THAT HOLD US BACK FROM THE SUCCESS WE DESERVE

If you’re an entrepreneur, chances are this has happened to you.

You thought of an idea - either a new business or a new service/product within that business - got lost in a whirlwind of passion, excitement and enthusiasm for how you’d bring it to life.

You spent hours mapping things out, creating a task list for all the steps you needed to take and had an excitable conversation with someone you love (who still doesn’t really ‘get’ what you do) about this awesome thing.

You couldn’t sleep, you forgot to eat - you were so engrossed in making your dream come to life.

But then you stopped.

You woke up one morning feeling less excited, less passionate.

Doubts started to creep in.

What ifs started to show up.

Overwhelm hit you like a ten tonne truck.

WHY I BECAME A SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER + HOW I GOT STARTED

You’re probably here for 3 reasons:

  1. You’re thinking of becoming a social media manager and wondering whether it’s even possible for you (it is)

  2. You’ve decided to become a social media manager and want to know how to get started

  3. You know me from my podcast or you’re connected with me on socials and wanted to know a bit more about my story

In this blog post, I’m going to share with you why I decided to become a social media manager and how I got started.

Before I started my own business, I was really interested to read about other entrepreneur’s journeys and what made them take the leap into owning a business. Throughout my story, my hope is that you’ll find inspiration, motivation and feel empowered to go after your dreams too.

At 21, I went on my first solo backpacking trip and my love for travel was born.

HOW TO STOP PROCRASTINATING + START TICKING OFF YOUR GOALS EVERY WEEK

We’ve all been there, haven’t we?

Faced with that one task that we keep pushing to tomorrow, pretending it’s not important and doing everything in our power to avoid looking at it on our to do list.

We can’t put our finger on it but there’s just something about it giving us chills.

It’s staring us in the face, teasing us, making us feel guilty, like a failure, for not eating the frog first (disclaimer, I haven’t read that book so apologies if completely wrong analogy).

The closer the deadline gets, the more the overwhelm rises.

We turn to Netflix, cleaning the kitchen, putting on a meditation and pretending we really need to do the mindset shizz right this second. Or we tell ourselves a power nap will help and accidentally (on purpose) forget to set a 20 minute alarm.

Oops. No time for the task now!

FROM BEING STUCK TO SLAYING YOUR GOALS: HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

Being stuck is the worst, isn't it?

Whilst it definitely is a mental thing, it can feel physically draining.

You don't wanna get out of bed.

You don't wanna switch off the Netflix.

You don't wanna open up your to do list because OMG I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M DOING.

But there comes a point where you have to make a choice: get yourself out of the mud or sink into the quicksand and disappear forever.

However appealing the quicksand may feel right now, I urge you to go for option A.

WHY YOU NEED A BIG VISION + HOW TO CREATE IT

Dream clients, dream life.

In order to get those dreamy clients and live that dreamy life, you have to have a vision.

When you have a vision in mind, you are more likely to feel motivated, to be productive and to feel confident about what you're doing because you'll know you're doing it for a purpose.

If we don't know what we want or we can't work out what we want, we procrastinate, we faff around doing tasks that don’t move us forward, we choose Netflix over action, and then that all leads to feelings of guilt that we’re not taking action. The feelings of guilt stop us moving forward and throw us into a downward spiral of self-criticism, judgement and comparisonitis.

How hard is it to take action when you lack confidence and feel like you’re not as good as your peers who are ‘killing it’ on Insta?

4 IMPORTANT LESSONS I LEARNED AS A SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER

When I started my business as a social media manager, I was pretty confident I could be an overnight success.

I knew social media.

I had experience with social media - I’d used it to launch my first business and I’d managed it for the company I worked at previously.

I got results from social media - generating leads, increasing traffic and making posts go viral were all things I had on my achievements list.

When the enquiries started pouring in, I knew I was gonna succeed.

But after spending hours creating and sending elaborate, detailed proposals, the leads just weren’t converting.

TACKLE IMPOSTER SYNDROME IN 10 SIMPLE STEPS

Imposter syndrome is common amongst social media managers and can be a huge reason for why we’re not signing the clients we want, showing up online or charging our worth.

When I started my business as a social media manager in 2017, I’d never heard of imposter syndrome.

But I was experiencing a lot of self doubt, thoughts of ‘who am I to be doing this?’, worrying constantly that the (great) results I was getting for clients weren’t good enough and when I was finding things simple and easy to do, I felt like a fraud.

DON'T LET THESE 7 DEADLY SINS DESTROY YOUR BUSINESS

A few weeks ago, I watched the film Seven for the first time. I say the first time - when it came to the dramatic, cliffhanger ending, it turned out I’d already seen that bit.

After watching the film, my brain started processing it and as it so often does, started thinking about how the seven deadly sins could relate to my business - or yours of course. I looked at each sin one at a time and found it startling easy to associate them with things I’d done in the past that had affected my business in a negative way.

FINDING A WORK/LIFE BALANCE - IS THERE SUCH A THING?

One of the things I struggle the most with as a business owner is getting the work/life balance right.

I used to feel like I was all in with either one or the other and struggled with working non stop or socialising non stop.

When I moved to Utila in February 2017, I'd just launched my business as a social media manager. With the pressure on to sign some clients, I spent 12-14 hours a day 'hustling' in front of my laptop.

STOP OVERCOMPLICATING YOUR BUSINESS

I’ve always been brilliant at making things complicated for myself.

And I bet if you’re reading this, you are too.

Shall we form a gang?

I’m gonna share my story with you about how, when I realised I was making life difficult for myself, I stripped things back and, in doing so, scaled to the next level.

WAIT! Before you click off because you think this is another ‘scale to 6 figures’ post, it’s not.

5 BOOKS EVERY ENTREPRENEUR SHOULD READ

As entrepreneurs, it’s important we dedicate time to learning and growing as a person. One of my favourite ways to do this is by reading a book written by someone who’s been where I am and is now where I want to be.

Reading as little as a chapter a day can make such a difference to your mindset, to your motivation levels and can inspire you if you’re feeling stuck.

HOW TO MASTER YOUR MINDSET WITH AUDIBLE

As a Confidence Coach, I talk about the importance of working on your mindset a lot. Just like our bodies need a regular workout to stay healthy and full of energy, our minds do too.

Activities such as journaling, repeating positive affirmations and meditation are all great ways to increase your confidence and keep anxiety at bay but what can you do when you don’t have much time or you’re sat on a plane and accidently packed your journal in your suitcase?
